Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Nearly two decades ago, Ángeles Caso published Las olvidadas, the first part of a unique project to reconstruct a cultural female genealogy of all those women who broke with societal expectations and dared to live unconventional lives and imagine to create a better world, despite critical and official scorn.

The Disowned covers the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a crucial time in Western history that gave rise to many of today’s conventions.  This was the era of painters such as Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun and Adélaïde Labille-Guiard; Enlightenment figures Mary Montagu and the Duchess of Osuna; scientists such as the Marquise of Châtelet and Ada Lovelace; frustrated revolutionaries the likes of Olympe de Gouges and Mary Wollstonecraft; the writers Mary Shelley, the Brontë sisters and Emilia Pardo Bazán; early feminists such as Flora Tristan, Concepción Arenal and Rosario de Acuña; the Impressionists Berthe Morisot and Camille Claudel... Devoted to the arts, philosophy, freedom and the rights of the downtrodden, they were censored by the liberal bourgeoisie, which could find no place for them. These repeated rejections planted the seeds of feminism, which proved to be an unstoppable force.

Ángeles Caso fuses literary genres to bring us this exciting, validating and deeply rigorous account of some of history’s heroines, who dared raise their heads and their voices. By profiling their causes, she encourages today’s women to pursue their own.
