Overview

The Enigmatic Parables of Jesus

Modern parable scholars have long been concerned with asking what Jesus said and what he intended by his parables. Ruben Zimmermann goes further in his book The Enigmatic Parables of Jesus and explores the dynamics of parabolic discourse in all its rich complexity. The introductory chapters address the history of the research and distinguish historical from literary and reader-oriented approaches, followed by a postmodern hermeneutic that analyzes narrative elements and context, traces the sociohistorical background.

Subsequent chapters focus on a parable from early Christian sources (Mark, Matthew, Luke, John, and the Gospel of Thomas) to explore how parables function in each literary context. Above all, the principle reigns that the theological meaning or "message" of a parable cannot be extracted from the parabolic form; thus, parables continue to invite the participation of hearers and readers to this day.

The study of Jesus' parables also represents a challenge with respect to their meaning, for there is a growing tendency among parable scholars to recognize the impossibility of reducing the meaning of these texts to a single interpretation. The structure of his book is divided into two parts.

In the first he approaches the study of the parables from three different approaches, which he applies to different parables. In the second, he approaches the study by proposing an integral methodology for the study of parables, which he applies again in a practical way in different parables.
