Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

A story of what has happened in the world since the beginning of the new millennium to understand where we are headed.

The catastrophic course of the 21st century begins with 9/11, the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers. That same year, 2001, China joined the World Trade Organization, the Enron scandal erupted—a symbol of the collapse of runaway capitalism and a harbinger of the Lehman Brothers crash—and Washington withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. The decline of the American Empire was set in motion and has not stopped accelerating since then, throughout this crazy first quarter of a century. Then came the Great Recession, the euro crisis, Brexit, Trump and the rise of populism, the pandemic, and a glut of armed conflicts resembling a global civil war, in a macabre dance in which Europe is unable to shake its addiction to drawing lines in the sand.

In The Barbarian Invasions, Claudi Pérez reviews the recent years of crisis through two intertwined theses. One: the barbarians were not at the gates, but firmly entrenched at the heart of the system, with a far-right allied with the tech magnates who have spearheaded a reactionary backlash in geopolitics and geoeconomics. Two: the pessimism characteristic of these times is perfectly justified by this toxic mix of disorder and discontent, but the catastrophism is excessive; the Apocalypse almost always disappoints its prophets. We are the healthiest, wealthiest, and longest-living people in history, but at the same time, we are increasingly afraid: that is one of the great paradoxes of our time. We have entered a new era of fear, and ahead of us, moreover, the future is revealing the menacing face of the climate crisis. Even so, we must remember Paul Auster: “It seemed as if the world were about to end, but it didn’t.”
