Overview
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
The author of Cold Skin, translated to over 30 languages, returns with a true story about fear and fascination for the unknown.
It would be hard to find a group of people further from our physiognomy and our cultural patterns that the inhabitants of the African jungle, poorly referred to as “pigmies.” They are far from being like us and like everyone else. They are the exotic of the exotic. Homer gives this name to certain beings in The Iliad, and from one of his verses springs one of the most ridiculous and enduring misconceptions in scientific history. The poet referred to creatures as fabulous as our gnomes. However, the myth endured and, from the nineteenth century on, against all prognosis and driven by science, literature, and fantasy, many explorers have gone looking for them in the heart of Africa.
The Heart’s Darkness follows the adventures of some of them: the extravagant and seductive Paul Du Chaillu, the arrogant German botanist Georg Schweinfurth, the unjustly forgotten ethnographer Paul Schebesta, painter Anne Eisner and her husband Patrick Putnam, anthropologist Colin Turnbull, and even Albert Sánchez Piñol himself. They all embarked on this voyage towards something so very important to them, and they all found what they were looking for. However, there is a tremendous paradox: what they found does not exist.
