Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

A moving, perceptive story set in contemporary Tokyo about love, loneliness, friendship, the crushing work culture, and the increasing difficulty of achieving personal fulfillment.

Fuyuko Irie is a freelance proofreader in her thirties. She lives alone and is unable to form meaningful relationships, so she has little contact with anyone beyond Hijiri, her editor. When she looks at her reflection she sees a tired, spiritless woman who has failed to take control of her own life. Her only consolation: the lights. Every Christmas Eve Fuyuko goes out to catch the lights that fill Tokyo’s night. But a chance encounter with a man named Mitsutsuka awakens something new in her. And her life begins to change.

Yet as that long-postponed change starts to occur, painful episodes from Fuyuko’s past surface, and her behavior begins to unravel more and more.

A sharp, lucid novel that is entertaining and moving; it will make readers laugh and it will make them cry, but, as only the best books do, it will remind them that sometimes pain is worth it.
