Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

A chilling testimony about physicians' role in carrying out the Final Solution at the Nazis' most infamous camp.

On 27 January 1945, Soviet troops entered Auschwitz-Birkenau and discovered with horror the Third Reich’s principal extermination center. Sixty thousand prisoners were liberated, but seven thousand seriously ill detainees remained. How did they survive that hell? What role did physicians play in the camp's organization?

Based on unpublished documents and survivor testimonies, Bruno Halioua demonstrates the responsibility of SS doctors in the Final Solution. They committed some of the worst atrocities and used thousands of people as guinea pigs for their experiments. The book also examines the reverse movement: deported physicians who risked their lives to help the sick, using deception, concealment, theft, and forged documents to save others, and the moral tensions of entering the so-called “grey zone” described by Primo Levi.
