Lytham is the older of the two, while St Annes-on-Sea (as it used to be known) was a planned town laid out by a Victorian mill owner for a better class of holidaymaker, its grid pattern of wide avenues lined with genteel late Victorian and Edwardian villas. The first decade of the twentieth century was also the period when the sending of picture postcards became almost a national obsession. Today these postcards provide us with a unique and fascinating record of the buildings, the traffic and the people of a long-vanished England.
