The protagonist writer of this novel has postponed a very important family duty for decades: to tell the exceptional story of his grandparents and his mother, whose origins trace back to the early 20th century in the Peruvian Amazon. Now, with his mother nearing her ninetieth birthday, he feels the time has come to settle that debt. This is how Mamita comes to life—a novel that intertwines two intimate relationships: the memory of the love between parents and their kids and the very process of writing. Through walks around the city, recollections from the Amazon jungle, and metafictional reflections, the writer-son explores the nature of his family ties, the social and racial tensions that permeate them, and the indelible mark of death. At the same time, he confronts the challenges of the novelist’s craft in capturing what time so often renders irretrievable.
