Overview
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
Poems written between 1983 and 1986. The poet observes, imagines, and evokes the apocalyptic prophecy fulfilled during the two major earthquakes of 1985.
On that disastrous morning of September 1985, "the land we destroyed made itself present." A fateful earthquake revealed "to what extent the earth loathes us: / it sees us as insects / torturers gnawing it from the inside." Its devastating vengeance laid bare that it "is the profound name of death." The survivors ask, "Are we going to build / another city, another country, another life? / Otherwise, the collapse will continue."
A constant innovator of poetic practice, in Miro la Tierra—a collection of poems written between 1984 and 1986—José Emilio Pacheco bestowed new value upon poetry by highlighting its capacity as chronicle and testimony: a historical act of justice toward those who left us the mandate to remember them.
