Mount Kisco, a vibrant suburban village 30 miles north of New York City, has been many things over its long history.
To the native Munsee people, the word “Kisco” designated a “muddy place” at the confluence of life-giving waterways. During the American Revolution, Mount Kisco was a desolate no-man’s-land, used as a refuge for Washington’s troops following the Battle of White Plains and later as a meeting spot for Washington and Rochambeau prior to their fateful march to Yorktown. In 1847, the nascent village was catapulted into modernity by the arrival of the Harlem Railroad. Over the next century, it would grow to encompass a thriving downtown business district, a flourishing arts scene, and many industries, including one with a secret link to the Manhattan Project. Twentieth-century urban renewal and development sparked yet another transformation, positioning Mount Kisco as the commercial hub of northern Westchester at the expense of many older landmarks and neighborhoods. In the decades since, residents have taken up the cause of preservation, bringing newfound appreciation to the village’s natural and historical resources.
Madeline Kearin Ryan is an archaeologist and fourth-generation Mount Kisco native. The culmination of over a decade of work with the Mount Kisco Historical Society, this book features photographs from numerous archives and private collections as well as finds from the archaeological excavation of a Revolutionary War site in the heart of Mount Kisco.
