School's out for summer, but Charlie Ford still has a lot to learn about being a death god.
As if being born a death god wasn’t enough, Charlie s and their twin Sam have also inherited their great-aunt Eleanor’s New York City brownstone apartment. It wouldn’t be such a burden if Eleanor hadn’t been a death god herself–and the last elder of the House of Snake. Now the other Houses expect the Fords to command the sizeable army of ghosts Eleanor amassed and join their ancient order, though Charlie and Sam would just as soon sell the place and leave before they get in over their heads.
But Charlie can’t pass up a summer in the city where their boyfriend just moved. So they convince Sam to help them renovate the apartment, and in the meantime, they can train under their surly teenage death god allies, Jessie and Jill DaRosa. The DaRosas are part of the formidable House of Scorpion, an order that uses their ghosts to control global politics and hoard resources. Jessie and Jill intend to introduce Charlie and Sam to the cutthroat world of death god Houses—but before they can, the DaRosas’ ghosts go missing.
The elders within House of Scorpion find it awfully suspicious that Charlie and Sam arrived on the scene just before this unprecedented calamity, and they accuse the Ford siblings of stealing their spirits to elevate the fallen House of Snake. To prove their innocence, Charlie and Sam must find the ghosts and return them—or become ghosts themselves.
