Overview
—The New York Times

THE STORY OF A FAMILY TORMENTED BY GUILT, BETRAYAL, AND MADNESS.
AN AUTHOR ACCLAIMED BY INTERNATIONAL CRITICS.
"Writing as tense and complex as Coetzee's." —The New York Times
"Dry, concise, direct, writing of extraordinary expressive power. [...] Simply masterful." —Fernando Aramburu, El Mundo - La Esfera de Papel
In the family home in La Araira, where eight sisters live under the shadow of a devastated mother and a decaying lineage, every silence is a threat. The seventh of them, Nazarena, obsessively sweeps the courtyard to ward off misfortune, but it is in the dust that the cracks open up: the rivalries between the sisters, the dead who return, desire as an escape, the animals that foreshadow disasters, and a past that is embodied in visions and terror. Karina Sainz Borgo's prose, full of intense images and ancestral resonances, gradually illuminates what each of these women is trying to hide.
With echoes of Rulfo, García Márquez, Lorca, and the universe of violence and despair of It Would Be Night in Caracas, this novel explores human fragility in a profound and disturbing way, taking the tensions between guilt, power, and survival to the extreme, and showing us a territory where the real and the hallucinatory intertwine with disturbing accuracy. Nazarena is the story of a family fracture that beats like a sick heart and confirms the author's mastery in taking tradition to a place of her own.
