Over seven-hundred women and girls abducted from their native Africa arrive to work to exhaustion in the sugarcane fields and give birth to future slaves. Kaweka is among them, a young woman who will experience first hand the horror of slavery in the cruel Marquis of Santadoma’s hacienda. But she will soon show those around her that she has the ability to communicate to Yemayá, a fickle goddess that at times grants her the gift of healing and gives her the strength to lead her brothers and sisters in their fight for freedom against the oppressors who have enslaved their bodies, but never their souls.
