Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

The disowned son of a Basque family in decline comes back from New York to the land and the conflict that he left decades ago.

Family secrets and an old hatred that is renewed in each generation. This novel tells us about violence from a place so intimate that it fascinates and shakes us, and elevates the conflict to a classic tragedy. In it you will find the black heart of humans. But also hope.’ Rosa Montero

Borja works as a translator for an international organization in New York, where he lives with John, his partner. One night he receives a call from a forgotten cousin to inform him that his brother has just died and that she has something to give him. Long ago, in the nineties, Borja left the Basque Country to break up with a family and a land intoxicated by hatred and misunderstanding. In the United States, he became another person, someone who, with roots uprooted and a buried past, embraced a present lived in freedom and in another language. But one call may be enough to bring down the highest walls. Now he, the cursed son of a descended lineage, is the only heir to the abandoned mansion that dominates the sea from the top of the town of Algorta. Only he can open the door again and decide what to do with so many years of silence and pain. But closing the wounds is not easy and the effort to write a book about that past may only help to rekindle them.

Ortiz de Gondra creates a poignant exploration of identity, memory, and the possibility of constructing our own destiny apart from that imposed on us by family and land.
