Overview
Tucked into the mountains of the Cherokee homeland, the Oconaluftee Indian Village proudly stands as a living site where Cherokee culture, values, heritage and arts are shared and learned.
Established in 1952 by the Cherokee Historical Association and still running strong, "the Village" has welcomed tens of thousands of visitors from all corners of the world who come to learn about Cherokee history, culture and living lifeways. Apart from its important role in educating visitors about the Cherokee world, this place has provided cultural connection, a lasting community and economic livelihoods to hundreds of local Cherokee people across its 75-year lifespan. Using vintage and modern images alike to highlight the decades of memories and culture sharing at the Village, co-authors Bobbie Chew Bigby and Laura Blythe draw on the rich photographic archives of the Cherokee Historical Association. Together with the oral histories of Village employees both past and present, this richly illustrated book puts a spotlight on the importance of life at the Village and the ways that it has helped sustain and empower Cherokee culture over decades.
