The journey of Ulysses has become a universal myth and the Odyssey a timeless read. After a decade of war, an offense to the god Poseidon has kept the cunning hero away from his kingdom for another ten years, condemned to wander aimlessly and suffer various hardships. The Odyssey, which follows the fall of Troy, traces the steps of Ulysses—the Latin name for Odysseus, adopted in this translation—and brings us the tale of his long journey to return home to Ithaca. The myths that shape this great epic, Homer's ability to depict life in the Mediterranean at the end of 2000 B.C., and the emergence of a hero eager to return to his homeland have left a mark on the great authors of literature—from Virgil to Joyce—and have made the Odyssey a cornerstone of universal culture.
