Overview

Decido ir a quirófano.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

There are wounds no hospital can heal and places where medicine ceases to be a profession and becomes a form of resistance.

The story of the Spanish doctor who starred in the podcast Living and Dying in Gaza, directed by Almudena Ariza.

I decide to go to the operating room. The elevator isn’t working, so I head for the stairs. Before climbing them, I change course and step outside for a moment because I feel like I’m about to cry and don’t want anyone to see me. Sitting on a flight of steps, I cover my face with my hands and cry as quietly as I can, because there are family members and displaced people beside me.
That night, almost all my emotions froze. In the four months that followed, I didn’t cry again. If I had, I wouldn’t have been able to keep working.

If Only Healing Were Easier is the testimony of a doctor who decides to practice where almost everything is lacking. From Peru to Senegal and from Valencia to Yemen, Dr. Raúl Incertis’ humanitarian journey began at age eighteen in a modest hospital in Cuzco and led him all the way to Gaza, where he was caught off guard on that fateful October 7, 2023. Months after being evacuated from the Strip, he returns as a volunteer to face the horror once again, but also to discover the humanity and extraordinary resilience of his Gazan colleagues.

Throughout these pages, which take readers to some of the most ravaged corners of the planet, Incertis witnesses the suffering of those who cling to life without surrendering their dignity, all while waging his own inner battles.

A candid account that explores the urge to devote oneself to others, the price of living with death on a daily basis, and the human capacity to persevere even under the most extreme circumstances.
