Persuasion tells the story of a mature, sensitive, and underappreciated woman who, years after being persuaded to reject the man she loved, sees him reappear in her life—wealthy and honorable, yet still bitter. Perhaps for the first time in the history of fiction, the woman must fight for love to grant her a second chance. This mature work is considered one of Jane Austen’s most enigmatic novels, and it is undoubtedly the most critical of the society of her time.
This edition includes a detailed chronology of the author. It also features a superb introduction by critic and scholar Gilliam Beer, a specialist in the field of the Victorian novel and holder of honorary doctorates in literature from the universities of Oxford and Harvard.
