Overview
Founded in 1967 in the National Hockey League (NHL), the Pittsburgh Penguins are five-time Stanley Cup champions. The Penguins were named due to the igloo-looking arena, the Civic Arena, later Mellon Arena. The team included hockey greats Mario Lemiuex, Jaromir Jagr, Sidney Crosby, and Evgeni Malkin, among other talented players. In 1984, Mario Lemieux was drafted and went on to become one of the greatest players of all time. Following Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr was added to the team, and the Penguins won the 1991 and 1992 Stanley Cup championships. A new era began in 2005 when Sidney Crosby was drafted. He became the NHL’s leading scorer and the youngest team captain in the history of the NHL. Not long after, Evgeni Malkin arrived, and the Penguins went on to win the Stanley Cup again in 2009. In 2016, the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks to win their fourth championship. In the last Stanley Cup winning championship in 2017, the Penguins defeated the Nashville Predators, solidifying the team as a fixture in Pittsburgh’s history.
