Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Gabriel Zaid offers us an ancient and anonymous literary tradition

This is a book of overlooked poetry, the recovery of a missing page from the world’s cultural heritage. For the first time, it brings together Indigenous poetry from northern Mexico, including the territories of New Spain that are now part of the United States. Before the discovery of America, this entire region—sometimes called Arid America—shared related cultures, though they spoke different languages, most of which are now endangered. The collection gathers traditional poems from thirty-five languages, remarkable for their aesthetic and spiritual richness, far from anything primitive. Songs, lullabies, invocations, and rituals that celebrate the world and its beauty.

Although few anthropologists and linguists are interested in the literary value of this poetry, those who transcribe or translate it help preserve remarkable and little-known worlds. Gabriel Zaid, as a curious reader, explores, discovers, selects, and translates from English when necessary, offering us an anonymous and ancient literary tradition that opens the door to a unique poetic experience.
