Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Seven hundred years after its founding, Tenochtitlán rises from the depths of the earth to tell its story.

Although seven centuries separate us, Mexicas and modern-day Mexico City dwellers share a common past written over a place where there was once a lake. The history of Tenochtitlán is the prelude to the history of Mexico City, and the time has come to view it through its gods and rulers.

This is a tale in the purest Game of Thrones style, but Mexica and true, in which, while the gods imposed their will, the tlatoanis learned that it was better to dominate than to be dominated, to exploit rather than be exploited, and that, to become the most powerful empire of their time, they needed war and countless human sacrifices.

The Mexicas were an exceptional civilization—pioneers of urban transformation in the Valley of Mexico—, their capital had no comparison in the known world, and their rulers wrote history from behind the scenes of power, ambition, vengeance, and strength. In other words, from the complex human condition present throughout history.

Alejandro Rosas, a renowned Mexican historian and popularizer, has decided to bring the poorly told Mexica story to the sacrificial stone and, in return, offers us an interpretation free of prejudice, populist rhetoric, and the overvaluation of the indigenous past promoted by official discourse.

This is the story of Tenochtitlán as you never imagined it. Why? “Because history had never dared so much.”
