Overview
Sam Houston State University began as the Sam Houston Normal Institute, established by the 16th Texas state legislature as the first institution of higher education dedicated exclusively to preparing teachers for public schools. The institute opened in October 1879 in Huntsville, Texas, with 110 students, which has now grown to over 21,000. Huntsville, located in southeast Texas, serves as the county seat of Walker County. It was once home to Gen. Sam Houston, the first and third president of the Republic of Texas. This pictorial history provides a glimpse into the growth and evolution of Sam Houston State University from the first Texas teachers’ college to a recognized research university.
Authors Dianna Kim, criminal justice librarian; Barbara Kievit-Mason, university archivist since 1998; and Trent Shotwell, special collections librarian, all currently work at Sam Houston State University’s Newton Gresham Library. The images featured in this pictorial history, selected by the authors, come from the collections of the University Archives at Sam Houston State University.
