Black Magic, originally drawn for a fanzine, became Shirow Masamune’s professional debut when it was published in 1985. Set in the advanced civilization that once existed on Venus before a runaway greenhouse effect turned Earth’s sister planet into a hellscape, Black Magic prefigures many of the concepts of Shirow’s later Appleseed, including the emblems of Greek mythology among a technological society, a supercomputer’s designs for utopia, and the lethal difference between a tool and its user.
Orion, first released in 1991, is a wild romp through cosmic disaster as the ancient Yamata Empire hatches a scheme to capture all negative karma and destroy it in a mystical reactor. What could go wrong? Literally everything, and the fate of existence comes down to a duel between Susano, the God of Destruction, and the bratty sorceress Seska, who intends to use this crisis to become the all-powerful ruler of the galaxy…which, she hopes, will impress a guy she likes!
Dominion made its debut in 1986. In a future Japan where urban pollution is so bad that people wear gas masks, criminals like Buaku and his gang have to be badder…and cops have to be the baddest. Police Sergeant Leona Ozaki is ready to meet that standard, tearing up Newport City with the treads of her beloved mini-tank, Bonaparte. The Tank Police was set up to take down Buaku’s organization, but high-speed chases with armored vehicles is no way to build the public trust!
Dominion: Conflict 1 (No More Noise) from 1995 is an alternate world re-take of the original story setting. Buaku’s brawny, big-haired, bioengineered henchwomen Annapuma and Unipuma have been called a lot of things, such as “the extinct megafauna of today’s catgirls.” But from now on you can call them both “Officer,” as it turns out that being androids, they have legal immunity for their crimes—and needing a new job, they’ve just joined the Tank Police…assigned to ride along with their former pursuer Leona!
