Overview

Rita Vásquez and J. Scott Bronstein, members of the editorial staff of La Prensa de Panamá, the only newspaper in that country involved in the investigation known as The Panama Papers, reveal the secrets of the famous journalistic operation.

Why is lawyer Jürgen Mossak—son of a Nazi official—trying to dissuade the managers of La Prensa from continuing with the investigation that implicates his firm in illicit financial proceedings? How did the lawyer’s office operate to offer their services to clients who on occasion ended up being criminals? How did the massive leak begin that eventually led to the discovery of the scheme? Who was interested in letting the world know the names of hundreds of people with investments in fiscal paradises?

< If, as it seems, there was interest in getting to the bottom of the investigation, why did the authors have to deal with the loss of friendships and professional relationships? Did these journalists feel threatened? Why was Panama tagged from within and from without?

In the style of a crime thriller, there is no lack of disappearances, sabotage, and threats against workers and journalists who were close to the firm’s clients and to the investigations. The authors also saw their security in danger. The case would end up not only pitting Panama against the world, but also Panamanians against each other, although the authors reclaim a country in the end: their own.
