Overview
Extraordinarily popular in his own day and an influential link between the clarity and balance of the Classical age and the new forces of 19th-century Romanticism, Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847) was a prolific writer of songs. His contributions include more than 100 lieder and a dozen vocal duets, in addition to 60 part-songs. This handsome, convenient compilation amply demonstrates the luxuriance of the composer's output, encompassing 89 of his loveliest songs.
Such masterpieces as "Wartend," "Frühlingsglaube," "Neue Liebe," and "Auf Flügein des Gesangers" appear here, along with six songs by Mendelssohn's sister, Fanny, plus one duet (Op. 8, No. 12). Excellent new English translations for all the works in this collection include song settings of poetry by Nyron, Goethe, Schiller, Heine, and many other poets.
A must for singers and pianists, this inexpensive collection will enchant any lover of the 19th-century art song.
