Overview
Sun City West opened in 1978 and was the second active adult retirement community built in Arizona by the Del Webb Corporation.
Following the success of Sun City—the nation’s very first active adult retirement community, which opened in 1960—Sun City West would attract a new generation of retirees looking for larger homes, modern amenities, and a greater variety of activities that redefined what it meant to be a “senior citizen” in America. Located in a patch of desert once home to one of the nation’s largest cattle ranches, Sun City West was an immediate success and proved to be just as popular as the original Sun City for those looking for the fountain of youth in their golden years. Sun City West’s appeal remains strong among newer retirees and continually ranks among the most popular active adult retirement communities in the nation.
Bret McKeand is a past president of the Sun Cities Area Historical Society and former editor and publisher of the local newspaper. The Sun Cities Area Historical Society was founded in 1985 with a mission to preserve and promote the history of Sun City and Sun City West. The society operates the Del Webb Sun Cities Museum, located in one of the first homes built in Sun City.
