Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

“A novel that immerses us in a world of radical impulses, between the carnal desire and the desire for death, structured by a prose in which Marcos Augusto applies the rhythm and the aura of his poetry, but combined with an admirable psychological and atmospheric precision. As if a new Gil de Biedma were to discover that Grindr, life, and death are all three serious matters, and that there is a form of elegance that consists in getting dirty.” —Nadal Suau

Two men meet in a chat room looking for sex. One wants to get infected with HIV; the other promises to give it to him. And what begins as something sporadic turns into a romantic relationship.

The narrative weaves a story in which the everyday gives way to a web of lies, marked by desire and the fear of loss. The narrator’s words constitute a belated exercise in honesty, seeking to understand and be understood, while addressing universal themes such as grief and guilt. The book traces “a black-ink drawing” of the lover, “forgetting that clouds and clear days exist.” And in that drawing, art and literature engage in dialogue: elements that, together with memory and a guilty conscience, capture a portrait of the present.

Marcos Augusto composes in I Made You a God a provocative debut that uncompromisingly addresses erotic drive and the body’s decay, as well as our use of apps, the trust we place in science or magical thinking, and, above all, the lies upon which love stories are sometimes built.
