Overview
Upon the untimely death of the brutal Fyodor Karamazov, a dramatic unraveling ensues. The murder of a man who has lived solely, and heedlessly, to satisfy his own desires is hardly tragic, yet it profoundly alters the lives of his three sons.
The passionate and turbulent Dmitri’s enmity with his father is well known; the coldly intellectual Ivan discovers that his rationalism has unexpected consequences; and the devout Alyosha struggles to preserve his faith in the face of conflict. Vastly different, yet bound by circumstance, each must confront his own sense of culpability in the crime.
On the surface, the novel grapples with base human concerns—money, rivalry, and murder. At a deeper level, it explores fundamental questions of free will and morality, suffering and forgiveness, and ultimately the possibility of redemption in a bleak world.
Completed shortly before Fyodor Dostoevsky’s death, The Brothers Karamazov is widely regarded as his richest and most profound novel.
