Overview
Delavan, Wisconsin, 1854. Erich Meyer has spent the last month getting all the wrong sorts of attention at school. His family just moved to Wisconsin from Germany, and the school bully comes after him almost every day for not knowing English very well. Even Erich's teacher doesn't seem to like him. But the friendship of another immigrant boy lands him a job with the circus that's spending the winter in town. Cleaning up elephant poo is stinky, but the elephants don't care what language Erich speaks. And when a new and frightened elephant joins the troupe, Erich just might be her only hope.
