Overview
An engrossing spy thriller about a rogue CIA agent tracking down a former East German spymaster and Cold War secrets that won't stay buried
Jordy Egan, an American spy who has disgraced himself abroad, has been reassigned to the CIA’s “penalty box,” as a case officer for the National Resettlement Operations Center, an office so obscure that even its name is classified. His new job—looking after former foreign spies now living in secure locations under new identities—is, to Jordy, glorified babysitting. But when resettled Stasi colonel Emil Grimm sends a distress signal, it’s Jordy’s ticket back into the fray.
After a career dealing in secrets, Emil gave it all up—including Stasi files—when the Wall came down. He’s living in peace on a remote Greek island when strange men come knocking, claiming to be CIA. They seek an item Emil had kept to himself: the identity and whereabouts of Tommy Wells, a young American soldier who defected to East Germany in the 1980s.
Now in the clutches of those two mysterious Americans, Emil must once again fight for survival and look for an exit. Meanwhile, Jordy is hot on his trail, and Tommy is back on the run. As their paths converge and their prospects darken, all three must confront their Cold War pasts, in a race toward the heart of intertwined secrets that may yet do them in. From acclaimed author and master of the genre Dan Fesperman, The Resettlement Officer is a galloping, whip-smart spy story.
