In the mid-1800s, an educator named Charles Duncan McIver had a vision to impact North Carolina’s illiteracy by training women. He believed women were the key to educating children for the state’s future. With the help of the North Carolina Legislature, McIver attained the funding to establish the state’s first public women’s school in Greensboro, named the State Normal and Industrial School. Classes began in 1892 with 198 students. Despite building fires, typhoid, the Great Depression, and the unexpected loss of its founder, it became known as the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina and was the largest women’s residence college in the United States by 1942. In 1956, the first African American women were admitted, and in 1964, men arrived. Known today as the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), the university has grown into a world-class scholastic and research center.
Frances Watson Clark graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in English from UNCG in 1976. This is Clark’s fifth title with Arcadia Publishing. She is also a member of the UNCG Spartan Club Executive Committee. Dr. William E. Moran served as the eighth chancellor of UNCG from 1979 to 1994. He spearheaded the 100th anniversary of the school, implemented one of the largest expansions on campus, and worked to bring the athletic teams from Division 3 to Division 1.
