In 1877 Cornwall, meteorologist Hattie Ainsworth studies the storm patterns of Blackmoor Bay, publishing her research under a male pseudonym to earn the recognition denied her as a woman. But the information she inadvertently uncovers about a recent shipwreck points to something far darker than weather.
Grief-stricken sea captain Jago Enys lives in self-imposed exile, haunted by the loss of his wife at sea five years ago. Now another ship has shattered against the bay's treacherous rocks with no survivors nor witnesses, and as the local magistrate, Jago must lead the inquiry. When Hattie's findings raise troubling questions, he is drawn into a deeper search for the truth and, unwillingly, to Hattie herself even as the stakes turn more dangerous.
