Overview
At the turn of the last century, on the crowded streets of the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Hannah dreams of becoming a woodcarver. It's a time when women are prohibited from working in the Brooklyn workshops where magical carousel horses are being created by artists like herself; the difference is that they are all men. Even though she's barred from carving in the light of day, she finds a way to carve at night in a secret workshop in Brooklyn. Unhappily married, she longs for the day when she can live her authentic life in the open.
She meets a man who offers her a pathway out, but constrained by tradition and poverty, she almost misses her chance. This man lives on the wrong side of the law and when he runs to save his own life, Hannah decides to take a major leap of faith and track him down across the country on her own.
