Creada en colaboración con el Museo Nacional del Latino Estadounidense de la Institución Smithsonian, la serie Nuestras Voces comparte historias latinas que inspiran. El sexto grado ya es bastante difícil de por sí, pero Selena Estrella Herrera, una niña mexicano-estadounidense, además tiene que enfrentarlo en una nueva ciudad. Su familia se ha mudado a El Paso para cuidar de su abuelo (quien parece no querer compañía e insiste en hablar solamente en español). Sin embargo, cambiar de escuela tiene una ventaja: por fin puede dejar atrás su vergonzosa obsesión con la megaestrella musical Selena, la cantante en quien sus padres se inspiraron al nombrarla, a pesar de que ella no sabe cantar. Decidida a empezar de nuevo, se cambia el nombre a *Strella, evita a su abuelo gruñón e intenta seguir adelante con su vida. Hasta que un día, *Strella debe participar en un proyecto del Día Nacional de la Historia. ¿Qué tema elige su grupo? Selena. ¿Podrá *Strella reconciliarse con su herencia tejana y con su viejo amor por la cantante, sin dejar de ser ella misma? ¿Descubrirá alguna vez cuáles son sus propios talentos? Created in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Latino, Nuestras Voces shares inspiring Latino stories. Sixth grade is hard enough, but Mexican American Selena Estrella Herrera has to do it in a new town. Her family has moved to El Paso to help care for her grandfather (who seems not to want them there and insists on speaking only Spanish). One upside to being at a new school, though, is that she can finally leave behind her embarrassing obsession with musical megastar Selena—whom her parents named her after even though she can’t sing. She renames herself *Strella, avoids her grouchy grandfather, and tries to move on with her life. Then *Strella starts a National History Day project. The topic her team chooses? Selena. Can *Strella embrace her Tejano heritage and her old love of Selena and still become her own person? And will she ever discover what her own gifts are? In diary format, the Nuestras Voces series profiles inspiring characters from yesterday and today, and honors the joys, challenges, and outcomes of Latino experiences.
