Born in a village in Northern Portugal in the nineteenth century, son of a prostitute accused of witchcraft and an unknown father, young Mateus grows up with his grandfather, Vicente. But when Vicente dies, Mateus sets on a journey to the South, looking for his utopia, but also following the calling of greatness in a poor country bustling with the longing for freedom.
One Day I Will Get to Sagres ultimately tells the history of Portugal, a civilization in perpetual motion, through the life of an apparently insignificant individual, a bold peasant in a time when boldness is maybe needed most.
