Overview
Founded in 1877, University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy is the oldest continuously operating high school in Detroit. Rooted in the Jesuit tradition of forming “Men for Others,” the all-boys school has remained committed to the city, even as many other Catholic high schools moved or closed.
In September 1877, four Jesuit priests from St. Louis, Missouri, launched Detroit College, enrolling 60 boys in the Trowbridge residence on Jefferson Avenue. In 1890, the school moved across Jefferson Avenue, adjacent to Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit Church. Since 1931, its Spanish Colonial Revival–style building has been a northwest Detroit landmark. For 150 years, the school has produced generations of alumni who have made significant contributions in law, medicine, public service, business, education, and the arts. University of Detroit Jesuit fosters a diverse and dynamic student body, drawn from across metro Detroit. Rigorous academics, competitive athletics, robust arts programs, and a tradition of community service prepare young men for leadership and lifelong learning.
