Overview
Ever since World War II, thousands of military aircraft have arrived and departed the Westover Air Reserve Base.
In 1940, towering hangars rose over former tobacco fields of western Massachusetts, creating a new Northeast Army air base. Officials in Washington, leery of Germany’s sudden expanding dominance in Europe, were mindful of how close the base would be to America’s European allies. Westover Field was dedicated in April 1940 and named for Maj. Gen. Oscar Westover, chief of the Air Corps. He was killed in an airplane accident in September 1938. Multiple generations of service members have served at Westover through decades of historical events, like the Berlin Airlift, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, and the 1991 and 2003 Gulf Wars. Today, Westover Air Reserve Base continues its strategic worldwide airlift mission with eight massive C-5M Super Galaxy cargo jets.
Andrew Biscoe is a retired Air Force chief master sergeant whose 27-year career included an assignment with Westover’s public affairs office. Biscoe’s research explores life at the base throughout its decades of operations, including the drastic reductions at Westover following the April 1973 Department of Defense announcement, when the Strategic Air Command (SAC) turned over the keys of the base to the reserve. Lt. Col. James Bishop, USAF (Ret.), was a public affairs officer at Westover in the late 1990s and returned in 2010 to lead the operation as the chief of public affairs for the 439th Airlift Wing.
