In 1936, a little girl mysteriously disappears at the edge of the woods on the day an unknown drifter is found dead by the train tracks. Ardyth Flemming, best friend of the girl's mother, is convinced she's glimpsed the ghosts of missing children playing in the woods and confides in Garfield Murphy, who is tormented by his brother's similar disappearance years earlier. Ardyth and Murphy are determined not to ignore the signs that something sinister is hunting the local children, and they set out to prove that the ominous woods hide a foreboding secret.
In the present, Jovie Rowe, aide at a memory care unit, is fascinated by an Alzheimer's patient's memories of a decades-old disappearance and her warning that the woods are haunted. When local PI Micah Beckman confronts Jovie with the evidence that she's connected to the long-ago murdered drifter, it soon becomes clear that the past has a strong connection to the present.
