Overview
About the Translator:
Constance Garnett (1861–1946) was a prolific English translator who introduced the English-speaking world to the Russian giants. Over her career, she translated approximately 70 volumes, including the complete works of Turgenev and Chekhov, and the major novels of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. While modern scholars sometimes debate her rapid pace and stylistic “Victorianizing,” her fluid prose remains the foundational encounter for generations of Western readers with the Russian literary canon.
