The borough has a rich heritage of industry, including coal and lead mining, iron and steel production, and brick and tile making, which developed in the Industrial Revolution. The borough is situated between the Welsh mountains and the lower Dee Valley alongside the English border; the area to the south-east is flourishing agricultural land.
