Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Nobel Peace Prize 2018

Nadia Murad was a victim of the Islamic State's sexual jihad. Now she has become a human rights advocate, the first person to be appointed United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking.

This is her story.

On August 15, 2014, Nadia Murad's life changed forever. Islamic State troops stormed her small village in northern Iraq, where the Yazidi minority lived a peaceful life, and committed a massacre. They executed men and women, including her mother and six of her brothers, and piled them into mass graves. Nadia, who was twenty-one years old, was kidnapped along with thousands of other young women and girls and sold as a sex slave. The soldiers tortured and raped her repeatedly for months until one night she miraculously managed to escape through the streets of Mosul. Thus began her long and dangerous journey to freedom.

As a child, Nadia, a peasant girl, never imagined that one day she would speak before the United Nations or win the Nobel Peace Prize. She had never set foot in Baghdad, nor had she ever seen an airplane. Today, Nadia's story urges the world to pay attention to the genocide of her people. It is a call to action to stop the crimes of the Islamic State, a powerful testimony to the strength of the human will. The Last Girl is also a love letter to a vanished country, a vulnerable community, and a family devastated by war.

The courage and testimony of a young woman can change the world. So that it is not forgotten, because she wants to be the last to have to live it, Nadia tells her story.
