Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

A lighthouse and a mysterious mermaid.

A centuries-old seaside mansion built with wealth from the Indies.

A family. A terrible secret.

1920. Mairi lives with her father in a village lighthouse on the Atlantic coast. Known as “the mermaid’s daughter,” she is solitary child, with the ocean and nature as her only playmates. Her mother was lost in a storm, and the mystery of her disappearance is fuel for conjecture around local hearths on long winter nights. Mairi and her father are shunned by the superstitious villagers until the arrival of the prominent Andrade Puig i Serra family, who build an enigmatic colonial-style house on the rocky shore. Mairi’s life is transformed as, with Julia and Alfonso, she discovers the meaning of true friendship. All too soon, however, a betrayal will alter their destinies forever.

2007. Clara returns to Galicia in the middle of an existential crisis, determined to find herself and learn more about the history of the ornate mansion that has obsessed her since childhood, as well as the family that lived in it.  A sensitive and introverted young woman, she is hired as the assistant to Hilda Silva, an elderly writer and the guardian of many secrets. Clara embarks on a journey to the past in search of the truth behind the village’s silence, hoping to discover her roots and banish old ghosts.

Lucía Lago’s first novel has echoes of Kate Morton, Daphne du Maurier and Charlotte Brontë, with the magical elements from Galician folklore. Mystery, legend, romanticism and friendship form the backbone of The Mermaid's Lighthouse. A beautiful tale crafted with the brushstrokes of a seaside sunset and the ferocity of an ocean storm, it captivates the reader with its siren’s song.
