Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

“Paulette Jonguitud reminds us that when we feel at our most impotent and powerless, there are certain powerful truths we can count on: support and care networks that can soften the blow of tragedy; the ability of imagination, art and playfulness to save us from despair; and, of course, the knowledge that dogs are not of this world.” --Gabriela Damián Miravete

A Displaced World is a polyphonic novel about the interconnected lives of four women: Paula, Miranda, Agustina and Inés. Agustina, struggling with an undiagnosed anxiety disorder, embarks on an emotional odyssey when she and her children move into the family home, Cubilete 189. The house triggers memories of her turbulent past, linked indelibly to her mother, Paula. An unexpected chain of events follows, taking Agustina to the brink of psychosis as she tries to protect her children from a hostile environment. Inés, Agustina’s daughter, finds an outlet in her connection with the machines created by Miranda, an enigmatic sculptor whose works appear in the neighborhood and start spreading through the city. As Inés’s relationship with the machines deepens, the line between reality and fantasy grows increasingly blurred.

Paulette Jonguitud crafts an extraordinary tale somewhere between horror and fantasy that earns her a place among the most authentic voices in Mexican literature.
