Overview
February 1994—Lynwood, Louisiana: Flaming crosses light up the night and terrorize the southern town. The resurgent Klan wants a new race war, and they’ll start it here. As civil rights prosecutor Adrien Rush is about to discover, the ugly roots of the past run deep in Lynwood.
For lifelong resident Nettie Wynn, the hate crime stirs up memories of her girlhood, when she witnessed white townspeople at a lynching. Her granddaughter Nicole DuBose, a successful journalist in New York City, wants the perpetrators who set the fires punished. As outsider Rush works with local investigators Lee Mercer and Matt McClure to interrogate KKK suspects and get at least one of them to flip, his personal feelings for DuBose begin to complicate his role. Then, crucial evidence becomes compromised, threatening to upend what should have been a certain conviction—and the lines between right and wrong, black and white, become even more difficult to discern.
Author Michael McAuliffe brings his thirty years of legal experience to bear in this thriller in which we see into the minds of both the innocent and the guilty, and in which the courtroom drama is as suspenseful as the search for justice.
