Overview
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
The companion book to Pedro Almodóvar’s new film, a story about the close relationship between reality and fiction, between inspiration and life.
A gift for film lovers.
Bitter Christmas presents two alternating stories. The first begins in December 2004, during the long Constitution Day weekend, and features Elsa, an advertising director, as well as her boyfriend, Bonifacio, and her friends Patricia and Natalia. The second takes place in 2026 and centers on Raúl, a screenwriter and director who is immersed in writing a screenplay: we soon discover that it is Elsa’s story. She is, in a way, Raúl’s alter ego, and he turns to autofiction as a solution to a long period of creative drought. He looks within himself and cannot help but also look at the people who make up his most intimate universe—his partner and his assistant.
This edition contains, in addition to the film’s screenplay, an appendix with comments on the creative process and the shooting of the film, written by Almodóvar himself; it is also lavishly illustrated in full color with stills from the film, images from the shoot, and excerpts from the storyboard, and concludes with a beautiful and personal text, serving as an epilogue, by Gustavo Martín Garzo. Bitter Christmas is a book that serves as the perfect companion to the feature film and will appeal to all lovers of cinema and culture.
