Since she couldn’t hide it and did not think of anything better, she puts the pearl in her mouth and swallows it before her mother’s finger can get it back.”

In between there are eighty years of adventures, loves, and farewells that take place during most of the twentieth century, in a Transylvania that saw regimes bloom and wither like trees in a square.
